Accessibility Information
What is accessibility?
Millions of people in the UK and around the world have disabilities that make it hard to use badly produced websites. People who are blind, for instance, use screen readers to listen to a web page. They sometimes find it impossible to use image-heavy websites, unless a text-only alternative is provided for them.
In most countries, including the UK, there are now laws that make it illegal to discriminate against disabled people, and that includes producing websites they can't access.
Accessibility is the practice of making websites as usable as possible for people with disabilities.
Is the Eden Sessions website accessible?
Yes.
Well, to be more precise we've done our best to make sure it's accessible to as many disabled people as possible.
We've tried to make all the pages on the site AA or AAA accessible. That's the highest standard of accessibility.
Of course, it is possible we may have overlooked something. If you spot anything we could be doing better please email us and let us know. We'll do our best to solve any problems you tell us about.
So what have you done, exactly?
Well, we've listened to the experts' recommendations, including those of the RNIB and the W3C. We've used the latest website coding standards, XHTML and CSS. And we've tested the site using various accessibility programs and online checkers.
Changing stylesheets
The Eden Sessions website uses quite a complicated design and we realize this won't be ideal for everyone. We've created an alternative, high visibility stylesheet which is more accessible to a wider range of people. You can view the high visibility stylesheet by clicking on the link in this sentence or using the "accessibility bar" which appears at the top of the screen.
Alternatively, you can switch stylesheets or turn all stylesheets off using your web browser. The exact method depends on which web browser you use.
Turning off stylesheets in Internet Explorer
In Internet Explorer to approximate not having style sheets:
- Use Tools / Internet Options / Accessibility .
- Check the three boxes at the top of the Internet Options Dialog to ignore colors, font styles and font sizes.
- Uncheck the box to Format documents using my style sheet, or check it and specify an empty style sheet.
Turning off stylesheets in Firefox
Firefox does a good job of turning off style sheets. Use the View Menu, Page Style, No Style.
Resizing text
You can resize text in order to make it easier to read. The exact method depends on which web browser you use.
